That is the question sitting underneath Living with a SEAL by Jesse Itzler, and it is exactly why this book hit me so hard.

On the surface, this book is hilarious. I mean truly hilarious. It is one of the funniest books I have read in a long time. It feels like David Goggins, Mat Best, and Tim Kennedy all got tossed into a blender with a highly motivated entrepreneur who decided his biggest problem was not lack of success, it was too much comfort. So what does he do? He brings a Navy SEAL into his home to live with him and train him for the New York Marathon. Not for an afternoon. Not for a weekend. Into his actual home, with his wife, baby, and real life all happening around them.

That alone should tell you this is not your average “self-help” book.

It is part comedy, part mental toughness seminar, part social experiment, and part kick in the teeth.

What makes this book so good is that Jesse Itzler is not trying to act like he has it all figured out. He is funny, self-aware, open-minded, and willing to put himself in uncomfortable situations to grow. That is rare. Most people talk about growth. Jesse invited it into his house and let it start barking orders.

And the guy he invited in, the man he calls SEAL, is exactly the kind of force that changes people. He reminded me a lot of David Goggins, but he also reminded me of the man who fathered me. Living in a house with an Army Ranger and Special Forces veteran taught me a lot growing up. There is a certain edge to those men. A certain tone. A certain way of looking at life where excuses do not get oxygen. You either do the thing or you do not. You either step up or get exposed.

SEAL brought that same energy into Jesse’s world, and that is where this book really comes alive.

When Your Brain Says No, Go anyway

My biggest takeaway from this book is simple.

When you think it is too tough to do, that is your brain lying to you. Get your ass up and do it anyway.

That right there is the heartbeat of this whole read.

Most people are not limited by their body. They are limited by the negotiation taking place in their own mind. The alarm goes off, they negotiate. The workout gets hard, they negotiate. The business gets uncomfortable, they negotiate. The goal gets bigger, they negotiate. Before long, they have talked themselves out of the very life they claim they want.

This book keeps dragging that lie into the daylight.

SEAL does not care about your excuses. He cares about your standard. And once your standard gets raised, life changes. Not because things get easier, but because you stop folding every time life asks a little more from you.

That part hit home for me.

I have felt that in bike racing, in training for half marathons and full marathons, and in business. There are moments where your mind starts acting like a cheap attorney, building a case for why you should slow down, wait until tomorrow, or take it easy because you have “already done enough.” That voice is full of crap more often than people realize.

This book reminds you that there is more in the tank.

A lot more.

Funny, Wild, And Weirdly Insightful

Now let’s talk about why this book is so fun to read.

There were so many moments that had me laughing. The hole in the ice on the lake. The would-be thieves that SEAL took control of with nothing more than a look, a conversation, and a bad-ass attitude that came through his eyes and tone. I honestly found myself giggling more often than I would at a local comedy show.

That is one of the reasons this book works so well.

It does not preach at you from a mountain top with a boring lecture and a clipboard. It entertains you while it teaches you. That is a powerful combo. It lowers your guard. You think you are just reading something funny, and then all of a sudden you are reevaluating your standards, your habits, and the soft little stories you have been telling yourself.

And Jesse’s humor is a huge part of that. He sees things in a simple way. He has great insight without trying too hard to sound deep. He is observant. He is open-minded. He is willing to look ridiculous in the name of growth. Frankly, that takes confidence.

Think about it. The man literally brought a stranger into his house so he could be held to a higher level of discipline. And he was not living alone. His wife and baby were part of the equation. That takes commitment. Or insanity. Maybe both. Either way, it made for a great book.

And yes, learning that Jesse’s wife is the founder of Spanx was one of those little moments that made the story even more entertaining. It is just packed with wild details that make you keep turning the pages.

What This Teaches Leaders And Business Owners

If you are a leader, this book matters even more.

The word that has stuck with me since reading it is tenacity.

You have to be tenacious every day. You have to write out your goals. You have to keep a can-do attitude when other people are confused, tired, negative, or just plain soft. It is tough being a leader because the people around you often do not fully get the weight you carry. They do not always understand what it takes to keep pushing when the pressure is on.

But boy do they love it when everything goes sideways and a real leader shows up to make things right.

That is where this book connects to business in a big way.

If you are leading a company, leading a team, building a brand, raising a family, or chasing some big hairy audacious goal, you better find your SEAL.

Maybe that is a coach.
Maybe that is a mentor.
Maybe that is a friend who refuses to let you play small.
Maybe that is a trainer.
Maybe that is the book itself.

But you need someone or something that gets you right in the head.

Because leadership is not just about strategy. It is not just about goals on paper. It is about mental conditioning. It is about your response under pressure. It is about whether you can keep going when the easy option is sitting there smiling at you like a lazy little devil.

This book does a great job of showing that growth often enters your life in a form that first feels inconvenient, uncomfortable, or downright annoying.

That is usually how you know it is real.

Why This One Is Worth Your Time

This is a five golden squeegee book for me. No question.

It is a masterpiece because it does two things at once. It entertains the hell out of you, and it upgrades the way you think. That is rare. Most books do one or the other. This one gives you both.

It is a book you do not want to put down. It is a book you want to read again. Not just because it is funny, but because it has so much insight tucked inside the laughter. You can enjoy it the first time and study it the second time.

And honestly, it made me want to go hire SEAL and have him live with me for six months. I would get so much stuff done, I would be next level, I would probably have a six-pack again, and I would definitely have an even lower tolerance for nonsense.

That may be the hidden magic of this book. It makes you want more out of yourself. Not because it shames you, but because it shows you what is possible when tenacity enters the room and comfort gets kicked in the teeth.

Who Should Read It

If you are lazy and too lazy to get out of your own way, pick up this book.

If you need motivation, pick up this book.

If you have a big goal that scares you, pick up this book.

If you are stuck inside your own bubble and need a different perspective, pick up this book.

If you want to be entertained while learning what real hustle looks like, pick up this book.

If you want to understand tenacity, not as a buzzword, but as a way of living, pick up this book.

My biggest personal takeaway is this:

Tenacity is something most people do not have, but when the right person walks in the door, they can teach you what it means and what it really looks like.

That is exactly what this book does.

So go pick up this book. Read it. Devour it. Then read it again. Not only will you get twice the laughs, but you will lean into tenacity and understand why it is such a powerful skill to have in life, business, leadership, and anything else worth chasing.

Golden Squeegee Rating: 5 out of 5

This one is funny, insightful, wild, memorable, and absolutely worth your time.

Keep Shining.
