We all have them—those tasks we dread, the ones that sit at the bottom of our to-do list, gathering dust. Maybe it’s making a tough phone call, starting a new workout routine, or tackling that cluttered garage. Somehow, those hard things feel so monumental that we keep pushing them off for “tomorrow.” But why do we avoid them? And what happens when we finally face them head-on?

The Psychology of Avoidance

Avoiding hard tasks isn’t just laziness—it’s human nature. Our brains are wired to seek instant gratification and avoid discomfort. This is why scrolling on social media feels easier than sending that email you’ve been dreading. The truth is, avoiding hard things often stems from fear of failure, perfectionism, or even a lack of confidence. The more we avoid, the bigger the task seems, creating a cycle of procrastination that holds us back.

The Reward of Doing the Hard Things

Here’s the kicker—those hard things are often the steps that lead to the most growth and success. Think about it. When you finally muster up the courage to tackle that task, the sense of accomplishment is enormous. It’s not just about finishing the task; it’s about proving to yourself that you’re capable.

Every hard thing you overcome builds resilience, boosts your confidence, and brings you closer to your goals. It’s like flexing a muscle—the more you do it, the stronger you get.

How to Tackle the Tough Stuff

Facing hard tasks doesn’t mean doing it all at once or doing it perfectly. It means taking steps, even small ones, to move forward. In order to become the greatest window cleaner in the world – the following are the strategies I used to succeed:

  • Break It Down
Take that monumental task and break it into bite-sized pieces. If cleaning the garage feels impossible, start with just one shelf.
  • Set a Timer
Commit to working on the task for 15 minutes. Chances are, once you start, you’ll keep going.
  • Reward Yourself
Give yourself something to look forward to after finishing the task, whether it’s a coffee break or a favorite video for motivation.
  • Find Accountability
Share your goals with a friend or post about them on social media. The added accountability can keep you on track. This is why I write my goals daily!
  • Visualize the Outcome
Picture how good it will feel when the task is done. Use that motivation to push through the discomfort. On my team – we celebrate the wins of the day, and you should try it!

You’re Not Alone

Remember, everyone has hard things they struggle with. But it’s not about avoiding them—it’s about learning to face them. Each time you take on a challenge, you’re proving to yourself that you’re stronger than your doubts.

Your Turn

Hey—what is the toughest hurdle you are facing today? Did you fail to go to the gym like you said you would? Maybe you hit that snooze button five times too many! Whatever that ONE thing was, take a moment and think long and hard about how it feels knowing you didn’t follow through.

Now that you’ve beat yourself up—allow me to help you. Reach out—send me a line on FB, X, or IG and tell me what you were able to overcome because you read this article and decided to kick ass like a Kung Fu Grip Window Ninjas Warrior!

Remember this—you’re building something extraordinary, and every effort you put in is worth it. Lean in, take that step, and show the world what you’re made of. You’ve got this!
