By Gabe Salinas – The World’s Greatest Window Cleaner
I’ve watched business owners come and go for over 30 years.
The lady who sold me video games in Cary, North Carolina, when I was 18.
Joe, who made the best buffalo wings I’ve ever had in my life.
Franchise owners from the company I was with before Window Ninjas.
They all had one thing in common.
They didn’t build businesses. They built themselves jobs.
And it cost them more than money.
It cost marriages. It cost relationships with their own fathers. It cost entire life savings.
But the biggest cost wasn’t money.
It was time.
And in the grand scheme of life, time is your most valuable asset.
My Wake-Up Call
I was older than I wanted to be when I realized I had built myself a job.
The truth is, I didn’t see it because I was living inside it.
Most people who fall into this trap never see it.
I had to hear it from a business coach I hired.
Once I heard it, I could not get it out of my mind.
Because he was right.
I started reflecting on where I came from and where I was standing.
That was my wake-up call.
I looked around my own backyard, Wilmington, North Carolina, and realized other business owners I knew were living the exact same trap.
From that moment forward, I built my company around one job.
Educate our leaders and our franchise owners.
The lesson was simple.
Be the owner. Not the company.
That shift creates franchise owners who get annoyed if they have to get on a truck.
Not because they hate the work.
Because they failed to plan.
And yes, it happens to the best of us.
The owners who create real freedom all have one thing in common. They lead people instead of managing problems.
Holding their teams accountable.
They build leaders inside their organization.
They don’t get on the truck, no matter who calls out sick or who’s on vacation.
What Freedom Actually Looks Like
Freedom isn’t working less. Freedom is having the choice.
Our franchisees take weekends off religiously.
Our franchisees hop on a truck just to visit one of their favorite customers, catch up for a while, and work alongside their team, not because they have to, but because they genuinely want to.
We have franchisees planning two-week trips to Europe.
And every single franchise owner shares the same three qualities.
Leadership. Systems. Accountability.
When Your Calendar Finally Belongs to You
There’s nothing like having a schedule that works for you, and not the other way around.
Mine is pretty liquid these days.
I still have things to check on, calls to make, follow-ups to run.
However, time freedom is what I am chasing these days.
For a lot of people, the whole day is boxed in by the job. 5:30 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. and then 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., that’s it. That’s the only time that’s actually theirs. It’s why the 5:30 a.m. gym class is always packed, it’s the only slot people trapped in a job can claim as their own.
I skipped that trade-off. I can wake up on my own time and show up to an 8:30 a.m. workout class on a random Wednesday, instead of dragging a tired body into a 5:30 a.m. class before the job owns the rest of my day.
If a friend calls out of nowhere and says, “Let’s grab lunch,” most days my answer is, “Cool, I’ll meet you there.”
I’m not telling you this to brag.
I’m telling you this because there are real opportunities out there, if you know where to look.
And I did not start this way on day one.
I had to put in the work to build the life I wanted.
That’s exactly what we teach our franchisees.
Build when it’s time to build.
Lead when it’s time to lead.
Then enjoy the fruits of your labor by building a business that serves you, instead of the other way around.
Build a Business That Serves You
This is why I built Window Ninjas the way I did.
The support system is here.
The playbook is proven.
The apple is ripe for the picking.
So what’s keeping you from making the call?
Your job?
