The invisible price tag on “I’ll start when the time is right.”
Gabe Salinas · Founder, Window Ninjas · April 17, 2026
I started cleaning windows at 17 years old. No car. No money. No blueprint. Just a squeegee, a bucket, and the decision to go.
Nobody told me it was a good time to start. In fact, most people thought I was nuts. But here is what 34 years in this business has taught me: there is never a perfect time. There is only the time you decide to move.
If you are sitting on the fence about owning a franchise right now, this article is for you.
The “Right Time” Is a Lie
I have talked to hundreds of aspiring franchise owners over the years. And the story is almost always the same. They are ready. They have done the research. They believe in the concept.
Then comes the pause. “I want to wait until after the holidays.” “I want to save a little more.” “I just need to get through this busy season at work.”
Six months pass. Then a year. Then two. And nothing has changed except the opportunity cost has been stacking up the whole time.
| “Every month you wait is a month your competitor is out there building a customer base in your market.” |
What Waiting Is Actually Costing You
Waiting feels safe because the cost is invisible. You do not get a bill in the mail for the revenue you did not earn. But the cost is real, and it compounds fast.
Here is what you are actually giving up every month you delay:
- Lost revenue. A home services franchise in its first year can generate $200K or more in revenue. A 6-month delay means you missed half of that launch window.
- Market position. Home services is a territory game. The owner who launches in your zip code first builds brand recognition and repeat customers before you ever knock on a single door.
- Team building time. Your best hire is not going to appear on day one. Recruiting, training, and retaining good people takes months. Every delay pushes that timeline further out.
- Momentum and confidence. The longer you wait, the bigger the decision feels. Doubt compounds just like revenue does. Action is the antidote.
- Franchise pricing and availability. Territories get awarded. Franchise fees can increase. The deal you are looking at today may not be on the table in 12 months.
I Did Not Wait for Perfect Conditions
When I went full time at 18, I had no truck. I borrowed rides. I did not have a fancy website or a CRM or a uniform. I had a work ethic and a willingness to figure it out as I went.
That first year was hard. I made mistakes. But those mistakes taught me things no business school could have. And every customer I served that year became part of a foundation I have been building for over three decades.
The people who wait for perfect conditions are still waiting. The people who move before they feel ready are the ones running the businesses.
What “Ready” Actually Looks Like
Here is a reality check. You do not need to have everything figured out. You need to have enough to take the next step. That is it.
If you can answer yes to the following, you are closer than you think:
- You have done research on the franchise model and the brand
- You have reviewed your finances and understand the investment required
- You have had a real conversation with the franchisor, not just browsed the website
- You have a market in mind and you believe in the demand
- You are willing to work hard for 12 to 24 months to build something real
You do not need to know exactly how every problem will get solved. That is what a franchise system is for. You need to make the call.
The Move That Changes Everything
I am not telling you to be reckless. Do your homework. Validate the numbers. Have the hard conversations with your family. Those steps matter.
But at some point, the research has to stop and the action has to start. And that moment is almost always sooner than people think.
The best day to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best day is today. If you have been sitting on this decision, stop asking what could go wrong and start asking what it is costing you to wait.
