By Gabe Salinas – Founder of Window Ninjas, Cold Plunge Convert, & Future Everest Climber
Let me start with a confession:
I read this book months ago and somehow never wrote the review. And that’s wild because I loved it. I don’t just mean “highlighted a few lines and moved on” kind of love, I mean pull-it-off-the-shelf-every-few-weeks-to-reread-the-good-parts kind of love.
So why now? Because I’ve been living it. And this book has more hot takes and cold benefits than any self-help biohacking book I’ve read in a while.
What’s It About?
Wim Hof aka The Iceman, is the guy you’ve seen on YouTube running shirtless through the Arctic, breathing like a wild Viking yogi, and doing things that make you feel like you need a nap just watching him.
But he’s not trying to make you extreme, he’s trying to help you reclaim control of your body, your mind, and your energy. And let me tell you something:
It works!
Wim’s method is built around 3 pillars:
- Breathing (like, legit breathing… not that weak “inhale-exhale” yoga class stuff)
- Cold exposure (ice baths, cold showers, freezing rivers, or your backyard pool if you’re me)
- Mindset & commitment (aka “don’t flinch when it sucks”)

Gabe’s Winter Experiment
So picture this… it’s winter. I finish a brutal run or crush a heavy lift session, and instead of hitting the hot shower like a sane human being, I walk outside, straight into my ice-cold backyard pool, waist-deep.
No warm-up. No hesitation. Just pure embrace the suck energy.
And what happened?
- My knee pain (which used to talk back after every run) practically vanished
- My muscle soreness disappeared like a magician at a kid’s party
- And I swear my brain felt like it got a software update
It was like turning my body into a Tesla with a brand-new battery system.
All that inflammation, all that tightness, all that “I’m not 25 anymore”… gone.
The cold didn’t crush me. It rebooted me.
What Wim Teaches About Cold
Now, Wim doesn’t just tell you to hop into a freezing tub and suffer. He explains exactly why cold exposure is a game-changer:
- It lowers inflammation (read: less pain, fewer pills)
- It boosts circulation and wakes your body up like a double shot of espresso for your veins
- It trains your immune system to be sharper than your grandpa’s pocketknife
- It releases feel-good chemicals (dopamine, norepinephrine) that put your stress and anxiety in a chokehold
- And it builds mental grit like nothing else. You try standing in 36-degree water and not feeling like a warrior after.
Breathing Like a Beast
Wim’s breathing technique is the second pillar of the method, and it’s no joke. The first time I tried it, I felt like I’d hacked into my own nervous system. It’s not meditative breathing, it’s cell-charging, body-oxygenating, spirit-igniting breathing.
It clears your head, boosts your energy, and honestly feels like plugging yourself into a power source the rest of the world forgot exists.
“A few times a week, I hit Wim’s breathing videos on YouTube — it’s like free therapy and a pre-workout had a baby.”
The Frozen Comeback Stories
Oh and Wim drops stories that sound like they belong in a movie. People lost in the snow for hours, bodies basically frozen solid… and they come back to life with zero damage.
Why? Because the cold slowed their system down and protected them.
Modern medicine is even starting to use that science, cooling patients post-surgery or after trauma to preserve organs. Wim’s just been doing it barefoot in the snow while the rest of us are reaching for a heated blanket.
Deep Info, Deeper Rereads
Now I’m giving this book 4.5 out of 5 golden squeegees.

Why not a perfect 5?
Because Wim goes deep, and I mean really deep. There were moments I had to stop, reread, and let it marinate before I moved on. The science, the stories, the protocols, it’s a lot. But that’s also what makes it valuable.
“This book isn’t a fast food drive-thru. It’s a 5-course biohacking feast.”
Take your time. Breathe deep. Let it hit.
Final Thoughts
Listen… this isn’t just a book about breathing and ice. It’s about taking back control of your body, your mind, and your potential.
It reminded me of why I started training hard.
Why I started reading.
Why I still want to climb Mount Everest someday.
This book reignited that dream. Not just because of what Wim teaches, but because of what I proved to myself by actually doing it.
If you want to live longer, hurt less, and stop living soft… read this book. Slowly. And implement a little more each day.
And when you’re standing in a freezing shower or holding your breath like a savage and your body wants to quit, remember what Wim says:
“You are stronger than you think.”
And I’ll add this:
Keep Shining.
