Why I Left College, Picked Up a Squeegee, and Built a Brand That Scales

Most people don’t associate window cleaning with wealth, ownership, or freedom.

They picture a side hustle.
A temporary job.
Something you do until you “figure it out.”

That belief almost kept me broke.

Instead, I walked away from college, picked up a squeegee, and built a million-dollar brand cleaning windows. Not because I was lucky. Not because I had connections. And definitely not because the industry was glamorous.

I did it because I learned a simple truth early on:

The business doesn’t matter nearly as much as the system behind it.

Let me explain.

Why I Left College (And Why That’s Not the Point)

I didn’t leave college because I hated learning.

I left because I hated wasting time.

I could already see it.
Debt piling up.
A degree that didn’t guarantee ownership.
A future where I’d work hard for someone else’s system.

I didn’t want a title.
I wanted control.

So I did what most people won’t do. I chose an industry that everyone overlooked.

Window cleaning.

Not sexy.
Not impressive at parties.
Not something people brag about.

And that’s exactly why it worked.

Why “Unsexy” Businesses Are Gold Mines

Here’s a hard truth that gets lost in social media noise:

Boring businesses pay.

They solve real problems.
They have repeat customers.
They aren’t dependent on trends.
They don’t disappear when algorithms change.

Windows get dirty every year.
Homes and buildings always need maintenance.
People always want reliable service.

While others chased startups, apps, and hype, I chased cash flow and control.

That decision changed my life.

Starting From Zero (Literally)

I didn’t start with capital.
I didn’t start with investors.
I didn’t start with a perfect plan.

I started with:

  • A squeegee
  • A ladder
  • Hustle
  • And a willingness to outwork and outlearn everyone around me

I knocked on doors.
I answered phones myself.
I cleaned windows myself.

Every dollar mattered.

But here’s what most people miss:
I wasn’t just cleaning windows.

I was building a system.

The Difference Between a Job and a Business

Early on, I realized something important.

If I stayed a window washing technician forever, I’d own a job.
If I built systems, I’d own a business.

So while I worked in the business, I obsessed over:

  • Pricing
  • Scheduling
  • Customer experience
  • Upsells
  • Repeat service
  • Lead handling
  • Follow-up

I paid attention to what worked and what didn’t.

Most people don’t do that. They stay busy, but they don’t build.

That’s why they cap out.

The First Million Isn’t About Revenue

Let’s get something straight.

The first million dollars isn’t about money.

It’s about:

  • Discipline
  • Systems
  • Leadership
  • Focus
  • Execution

Revenue follows structure.

When I crossed the million-dollar mark, it wasn’t because I suddenly worked harder. It was because the business could now produce results without me touching every job.

That’s the real milestone.

Why Window Cleaning Scales (If You Do It Right)

Window cleaning is one of the most scalable service businesses in America.

Why?

  • Low startup costs
  • High margins
  • Recurring revenue
  • Simple operations
  • Easy to train technicians
  • Strong upsell opportunities

But here’s the key phrase:
If you do it right.

Most don’t.

They stay small because they never invest in systems, leadership, or infrastructure. They build hustle, not leverage.

How Window Ninjas Was Built Differently

When I built Window Ninjas, I didn’t want a lifestyle business that trapped owners.

I wanted a platform.

We built:

  • Standardized service processes
  • Strong branding
  • Pricing systems that protect margins
  • A call center to handle bookings and follow-ups
  • Sales systems that convert leads
  • Leadership training so owners grow beyond the truck

The goal was never to clean more windows myself.

The goal was to create owners, not operators.

Working In the Business vs Working On It

This is where most people get stuck.

They’re great workers.
They’re dependable.
They care.

But they never step back to ask:

  • Why am I doing this task?
  • Should this be systemized?
  • Can someone else do this better?
  • What’s the highest use of my time?

Million-dollar businesses aren’t built by doing everything.

They’re built by designing everything.

Why Franchising Accelerates the Process

Here’s where people misunderstand franchising.

They think it’s expensive.

What’s expensive is:

  • Guessing
  • Trial and error
  • Bad hires
  • Bad marketing
  • Bad pricing
  • Wasted years

Franchising compresses time.

Instead of spending 5–10 years figuring it out, you step into:

  • Proven systems
  • Established branding
  • Support
  • Accountability
  • Leadership development

You still have to execute.
You just don’t have to reinvent.

That’s leverage.

This Isn’t About Windows

Let me be clear.

This story isn’t really about windows.

It’s about ownership.
It’s about choosing a vehicle that rewards effort.
It’s about understanding that freedom comes from structure, not luck.

I’ve seen technicians become owners.
Managers become leaders.
Operators build wealth they never thought possible.

Not because they were special.

Because they stopped guessing and started building inside a proven system.

What I’d Tell Anyone Considering Business Ownership

If you’re thinking about starting a business, ask yourself this:

  • Do I want to be busy, or do I want to build?
  • Do I want control, or do I just want income?
  • Am I willing to follow a system to earn freedom later?

There’s nothing wrong with working hard.

But if you want scale, you need leverage.

The Final Lesson

I didn’t build a million-dollar brand because I cleaned windows better than everyone else.

I built it because I treated window cleaning like a real business, not a side hustle.

I respected systems.
I invested in structure.
I developed people.
I focused on scale.

And I chose boring over flashy.

That decision changed everything.

If a kid with a squeegee can build a million-dollar brand, imagine what’s possible when you stop underestimating the opportunity in front of you.

Keep Shining.
