I was in my 30s before I learned how to run my own week.
Let that sink in. I already owned a business. I had trucks, a team, customers, and revenue. And I still woke up every morning and let the day run me instead of the other way around. My week owned me. Everyone else’s schedule, everyone else’s fires, everyone else’s needs got to decide how I spent my one and only life.
I thought that was just what owning a business felt like. Busy. Reactive. Behind by Friday no matter how hard I pushed. I wore the chaos like a badge. Look how needed I am. Look how much depends on me.
Here is what nobody tells you. Being needed like that is not a badge. It is a cage.
The One Lesson That Changed Everything
Then my first business coach sat me down and taught me the one thing that changed my entire life. He told me to calendar everything. And I mean everything.
Not just the meetings. Not just the deadlines. Everything.
And here is the part that flipped my whole world. He told me to schedule the personal stuff first. Not birthdays and holidays. I mean the life I actually wanted to live. I started with the outlook of how I wanted my days to feel, and then I built the business around that. Most people do it backwards. They pour every hour into the work, and then they hope a little life fits in the cracks. Hope is not a plan. Hope is how life ends up owning you.
So I started with a workout. Every single day I block one to three hours to move my body. Some days it is a walk. Some days it is a class at F45. Some days it is pilates or a bike ride. It does not matter what it is. It matters that it is on the calendar and I hold myself to it, because my health and my happiness are not leftovers.
Then I scheduled my work. And here is where people look at me sideways. I want to work no more than four hours a day. My work block runs 10am to 3:30pm. Do the math and yes, that is more than four hours on the clock, and there is a reason. I take a full lunch, an hour and a half, at noon, every day. So my calendar gives me my workout, my work, and my lunch, and none of them are fighting each other.
Then I schedule dinner. Melisa and I eat together most nights. And every Tuesday from 7 to 9 I block two hours for dinner with my best friend Larry. It is on the calendar just like a board meeting, because friendship is not something I want to squeeze in if there is time left. There is never time left. You have to make the time first.
The 5 F’s That Build a Whole Life
Look at what my week now holds. Fitness. Friendship. Family. And because I am working on my business instead of drowning in it, finances too. Add a little fun and you have what I call the 5 F’s. Friendship, fitness, family, finances, and fun. Five blocks that make up a whole life. And if you are a person of faith, you add a sixth. Faith. Because this is the whole point. YOU build the life YOU want. Your calendar should reflect your values, not mine.
Whatever matters to you goes in the calendar. There may be a guy out there who wants to fish every single day. Cool. Schedule it. Do not just hope for it. Maybe you are the woman who lives to try every new food spot in town. Awesome. Schedule it. Maybe you are the gym rat chasing 24 inch biceps. Fantastic. Go build those bicep pythons and enjoy buying custom shirts so your bowling ball arms fit in the sleeves. Whatever your dream life looks like, you do not stumble into it. You schedule it.
See Your Whole Life in Color
Now here is the next level, and this one is for the visual thinkers like me. Color code it.
Each of my F’s has a color. Fitness is blue. Finances are green. Fun is orange. Faith is gold. When I glance at my iPad or my phone, I do not read a wall of words. I see my life in color. I can tell at one look whether I am pouring myself into fitness, into family, into the business, or into a meeting with a prospective Window Ninjas franchisee. I know when I am working on my business and when I am with the people I love. If I need to, I can print the week and highlight what is personal and what is business, and the whole shape of my life is right there on one page.
I run all of this on Google Calendar. And one of the first things I do every morning is check it. Not because I forgot what my day holds, but because I refuse to memorize it. I want to save my brain power for creative work and business strategy, not for remembering that I have a 2 o’clock. My personal assistant can see exactly when I am open, so she books meetings by my rules, the way I want my life to flow. Everyone with access to my calendar knows the rules. They know when they can bring me action items so I can devour them and help the team win. They know when I am off limits. My calendar sets the boundaries so my team can operate the business the way it was built to run.
Act Like an Owner, Not a Cog
And that right there is the difference between being busy and being an owner.
A business owner is exactly that. An owner. So act like one. A high level millionaire CEO cannot be the main cog the whole machine depends on to survive. If the business falls apart the second you step away, you do not own a business. You own a job with a lot of extra stress. The real win is building a system, then leading while your team works the system.
It starts with your calendar. When you sit down and schedule the life you want, both halves of it, the personal and the business, on one single calendar, something shifts. You stop saying “I don’t have time.” You start seeing time you did not know you had. And you finally feel what time freedom and financial freedom actually feel like, which is the whole reason anybody wants to build something in the first place.
Life will own you, or you will own your life. The pen is in your hand. Open the calendar and start writing.
Keep Shining.
