Let me start by saying I get it. You are tired. Groceries cost more than they should, the news will not shut up about robots taking over, and every single day some 24-year-old on your feed is “closing six figures” from a beach chair while you are out here actually doing the work. It is a lot. If it feels like the ground has shifted under your boots these last couple of years, you are not imagining it. It has.
I have been on that ground a long time. I started off the back of a truck at 17, squeegee in one hand, no plan in the other. I have been broke, I have been comfortable, and I have been comfortable enough to get lazy, which is the most dangerous one of the three. So when I tell you what I am about to tell you, understand it is not a lecture from a guy in a suit. It is a heads up from a guy who has washed your windows.
And it starts with a story about a cat.
The Bowl Is Starting To Empty
I once knew a cat that was a killing machine. Lean, sharp, all instinct. It hunted because it had to, and it was magnificent at it. Then it got adopted into the good life. Bowl always full. Warm spot by the window. Zero reason to chase anything ever again. Give that same cat one year of easy living and the animal that used to catch mice could not be bothered to catch a nap on schedule. Fat, happy, and completely useless at the one thing it was built to do.
Then one day the food stopped coming.
You already know how this ends. That cat got skinny in a hurry, and skinny woke it right up. Within a few weeks it remembered exactly how to hunt, because the alternative was starving. The instinct never actually left. It just fell asleep under a full belly.
Here is the part nobody wants to hear. We are the cat. Our whole society is the cat. And the bowl is starting to empty.
For about eighty years, a big chunk of the developed world (England and the United States chief among them) got to be the fattest, happiest cats on the planet. We were the production machines. We made the stuff, we set the prices, and the rest of the world lined up to buy. It felt permanent. It was not. Technology moved, other countries learned to hunt, and the bowl moved right along with it. That is not a conspiracy. That is history. Great empires and great companies do one of two things. They reinvent themselves, or they become a chapter in somebody else’s book.
We are standing in exactly that kind of moment again, and its name is artificial intelligence.
AI Is Not The Villain. It Is The Alarm Clock.
Now before you roll your eyes and mutter “here comes the doomsday sermon,” let me stop you right there. This is the good part. See, AI is not the villain. It is the wake-up call dressed up like a threat. It kicks over the bowl on purpose, and the cat that was starving by Friday is hunting again by Monday. That is not the end of you. That is the start.
And that split is the whole ballgame. The same force that ends the coasting is going to richly reward the hunters. AI does not flatten everybody equally. It splits the room. It elevates the people who show up, who hustle, who make themselves truly valuable, and it quietly erases the people who mistook a full bowl for a guarantee.
The whole world is catching up now, and AI handed them the ladder to do it. It is no longer a given that prosperity has a home address. Prosperity goes wherever the hunting is best. So the only real question left for you is a simple one. Which side of that split are you standing on?
Value Is A Verb, Not A Wish
“Become valuable” is a bumper sticker until you make it real, so let me get specific.
Showing up late is not a quirky personality trait. It is a signal. It tells everyone above you precisely how much they can count on you, and the number lands somewhere below the person who showed up on time. Complaining is worse than being late, because a late person costs the team fifteen minutes and a chronic complainer costs the team its morale for the whole day. And calling out because your belly aches, on the very day you are needed most? That is not a sick day. That is a resume you are handing to your replacement.
Then there is the newest flavor of self-sabotage, the one they gave a cute little name so it would feel harmless. Quiet quitting. Doing the bare minimum on purpose. Coasting on the clock. Giving your employer just barely enough to not get fired. People think they are sticking it to the man. They think they have the boss over a barrel, because “nobody wants to work anymore” and “you cannot find good help.”
Let me let you in on something from the other side of the desk. Every owner, every manager, every CEO I know sees exactly what is going on. They are not confused. They are not helpless. They are doing math. And the answer that math keeps spitting out is a workaround. A system. A piece of software. A robot that does the coasting person’s job without the attitude, the call-outs, or the raise request. Quiet quitting does not put you over a barrel. It hangs a target on the exact task a machine is dying to take off your plate. You are not sticking it to the man. You are writing your own replacement’s job description, and you are doing it on company time.
Be The Rooster, Not The Dinner
Now picture a hen house. Full of birds, all pretty much the same, all fed, all comfortable, all convinced they are safe because there are so many of them. Ask yourself an uncomfortable question. What happens to the average bird in a hen house? It gets processed. That is the entire business model. Being one of many, indistinguishable from the bird next to you, is not safety. It is the opposite of safety.
But there is always one bird the farmer would never dream of touching. The rooster. Not because he crows the loudest, but because the whole operation depends on him. He is the reason there is a next generation. Take him out and the machine stops running. That bird is not competing to be average. That bird is irreplaceable, and irreplaceable is the only real job security that has ever existed, in any economy, in any century.
You do not become the rooster by demanding it, and you sure do not become it by posting about it. You get there by becoming the person the whole thing genuinely depends on. The one who solves the problem nobody else will touch. The one who makes the customer feel handled and safe. The one who, if they walked out tomorrow, would leave a hole that actually hurts. That is the standard. Not “good enough.” Irreplaceable.
Put The Phone Down
And here is where I have to take your phone away for a second.
A lot of what is quietly wrecking your ambition is not the economy and it is not AI. It is the twenty-third video today of Jenny, Jane, and some guy named Chad selling you a “success” that does not exist. Rented exotics. Green screens. A “business” that is really just a video teaching you how to sell videos about business. It is a beautifully edited lie, and it is doing two ugly things to you at the same time. It is convincing you that real success is supposed to look effortless, and it is quietly eating the exact hours you could have spent building something real. Your feed is not neutral. It is draining your brain, your output, and yes, your net worth, one thumb-swipe at a time.
Here is a truth you will never see monetized on a reel. The people really winning right now are boring about it. They show up. They get good. Then they get better. They compound. There is no hack, and anybody selling you one is charging you for the privilege of falling further behind.
So Which Cat Are You
Let me leave you where I started, with the cat.
You still have the hunter in you. Everybody does. It just fell asleep during a few easy years. Now the easy years are ending, and that is not the end of you. It is the wake-up. The world got faster, leaner, and more productive, and it is not going to slow down and wait for anybody. That is not a threat. It is an invitation. Every great company and every great country that survived a moment like this one did the same thing. They stopped lying around fat and comfortable, and they remembered how to hunt.
You get to make that same choice this week. You can keep waiting for the bowl to magically refill, keep blaming the robot, keep scrolling past your own potential. Or you can decide, starting tomorrow morning, to become the one they cannot afford to replace.
Be the rooster. Not the dinner.
Wake up. The hunting is good out there. But only for the ones who still remember how.
